My name is Jain Squires. I live with my husband, daughter and 3 dogs
near Scarborough, North Yorkshire UK.
My artistic outlet came later in life; my late father was an artist, and
my brother has always been. I never thought I had the ability to do
what they were doing, but found my ability to express myself is in
a three dimensional format. I am still not the best drawer/painter
but can visualize and create my own mental images.
When my daughter got her first dolls house 13 years ago, I started
making objects to go in it, continuing on to make my own furniture and
figures for my houses. Then about 8 years ago I made my first figure
from polymer clay and was smitten. I continued to make people and
animals, always looking for new ways to do things and improve. I am
completely self taught and always strive to improve on my last figure.
Influences are varied and can be from a character I have seen on
television or in a film, or a person I meet. I work in a shed at the
bottom of my garden, which is always very lived in! I try to do most of
my work in there, but often find myself inside, surrounded by dogs and
family, with modelling clay in my hand.
All my figures are individually hand sculpted, standing around 5"-6" tall and fitting in a 12th scale dolls
house or miniature scene. It takes at least 2-3 days to complete each figure. They often start off being
one thing and then insist on being something completely different. I take commissions, but generally
work better with a rough idea rather than very specific instructions.
I attend fairs at Kensington and the NEC during the year, where I enjoy meeting customers, new and old.
